I find the patterns and distinctions we have discussed this morning to be an additional confirmation that Joseph Smith could not have written the Book of Mormon. He did not have the capability to express such concepts with his rudimentary education and the amount of time he had to work on the translation, which was perhaps 80 days. Opponents and critics of the Church have claimed, "He had the plates for much longer than 80 days." To which I have told them: "I do not care. He could have worked on such a book for 50 years. If you want to argue about the time period, fine. Give him 100 years. Give him 200 years. Give him a staff of 80 of the best editors and assistants on the earth. But it would not make any difference. He could not have used language that eloquent, that precise, and which highlighted such important spiritual distinctions. It just could not be done."

There will be two great political parties in this country. One will be called the Republican, and the other the Democrat party. These two parties will go to war and out of these two parties will spring another party which will be the Independent American Party. The United States will spend her strength and means warring in foreign lands until other nations will say, “Let’s divide up the lands of the United States,” then the people of the U.S. will unite and swear by the blood of their fore-fathers, that the land shall not be divided. Then the country will go to war, and they will fight until one half of the U.S. army will give up, and the rest will continue to struggle. They will keep on until they are very ragged and discouraged, and almost ready to give up—when the boys from the mountains will rush forth in time to save the American Army from defeat and ruin. And they will say, “Brethren, we are glad you have come; give us men, henceforth, who can talk with God.” Then you will have friends, but you will save the country when its liberty hangs by a hair, as it were.

“And when I considered upon these things my heart exclaimed, Well hath the wise man said it is a fool that saith in his heart there is no God [see Psalm 53:1]. My heart exclaimed, All these bear testimony and bespeak an omnipotent and omnipresent power, a Being who maketh laws and decreeth and bindeth all things in their bounds, who filleth eternity, who was and is and will be from all eternity to eternity. And when I considered all these things and that that Being seeketh such to worship him as worship him in spirit and in truth [see John 4:23], therefore I cried unto the Lord for mercy, for there was none else to whom I could go and obtain mercy.” - Joseph Smith

Joseph’s faithful prayer for mercy and wisdom was answered with the First Vision. That vision gave the young Prophet far greater knowledge about God than any of the churches of his day possessed, knowledge that had been lost to the world for centuries. In the First Vision, Joseph learned for himself that the Father and the Son are individual beings, that Their power is greater than the power of evil, and that man is indeed fashioned in God’s image—truths that are essential in understanding our actual relationship to our Father in Heaven.

As a rule, leadership does not rest easily on young or inexperienced shoulders and human nature being what it is, young Joseph was manifesting the typical bravado of a boy his age who knows he is just coming into his own. Therefore, the telling ot these dreams was not so much an exhibition of boasting as it was a manifestation of the rich and exultant feelings which come to a youth when he suddenly realizes that he has a mission in life and a role to fill. He probably thought his family would be pelaed to know of these prophecies of his future leadership. But his brothers were bitter at what appeard to be a most preposteous presumption. This last dream even shocked Jacob. The scriputre says his "father rebuked him"

A person may profit by noticing the first intimation of the spirit of revelation; for instance, when you feel pure intelligence flowing into you, it may give you sudden strokes of ideas, so that by noticing it, you may find it fulfilled the same day or soon; [that is,] those things that were presented unto your minds by the Spirit of God, will come to pass; and thus by learning the Spirit of God and understanding it, you may grow into the principle of revelation, until you become perfect in Christ Jesus.
